Connor recently received the honor of being invited to join “The President’s Own” United States Marine Corps band as an alto saxophonist. Connor accepted this full-time position as a Staff Sergeant with the premier Marine band in Washington D.C., whose mission it is to perform for the President of the United States and the Commandant of the Marine Corps, in the White House and D.C. area. Founded in 1798 by an Act of Congress, the Marine Band is America’s oldest continuously active professional musical organization. The band’s legendary 17th director, John Philip Sousa, brought the band to an unprecedented level of excellence and shaped it into a world-famous musical organization. During Sousa’s tenure, the Marine Band was one of the first musical ensembles to make sound recordings. Today, “The President’s Own” is celebrated for its role at the White House and its dynamic public performances, which total more than 500 annually.
Connor James Mikula is an internationally award-winning saxophonist and active performer with an extensive repertoire ranging from the great saxophone classics to contemporary composers. He has won both national and international competitions and achieved diverse honors ranging from winning the Cortona, Italy New Music Sessions solo competition, being named a Yamaha Young Performing Artist as well as being a featured soloist at Carnegie Hall.
Connor is a passionate and motivating force in creating new saxophone music and supporting young and emerging saxophone artists. In 2016 he created Novus New Music, Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Novus has commissioned fresh and exciting works for both the solo saxophonist and saxophone quartets and has also established outreach programs to encourage and enable disadvantaged public school students to pursue saxophone study.
